Main Research Topics


The Laboratory for Forest Genetic Resources, where Fulvio Ducci is responsible, operates in the framework of CRA SEL mission; it  is working since 1948 in exploring,  selection and breeding programmes of forest tree species in Italy.

Main interests of Fulvio Ducci are on long-term breeding strategies studies, working either via field test evaluation assisted by biochemical and molecular markers as an integration of those strategies. Phenotypic traits, production of hybrids, adaptation and plasticity to climatic driving forces are being investigated.

The Laboratory he is coordinating is also skilled on tissue culture in vitro and other traditional methods or biotechnologies concerning forest tree breeding and Forest Genetic Resources management.

Conservation in situ and ex situ researches are an important field where skills are greater. One of the main experimental networks (sevearkla hundreds ha) in Italy is managed actively by the Lab.

Experiments and test are being carried out for developing methods of Assisted Migration and Dynamic Conservation ex situ.

Other main fields of interests are on legislation (presented to the Government the draft of the Italian Dlgs 386/03 concerning the directive 1999/105/CE) and methods are developed for establishing and mapping Provenance Regions in the Mediterranean areas, together with studies for conservation and management of Forest Genetic Resources through the nursery system.

About  30 forest species are (or were) investigated by the laboratory. Most efforts were focused on those which the economic interest is higher as:

Abies alba Mill., Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei, Abies specie mediterranee (7) sp., Acer campestre L., Juglans regia L., Pinus halepensis  Mill.,  Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold, Pinus brutia Ten., Prunus avium L., Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, Quercus sp. (3), Sorbus sp. (2).
